In Class Writing I: Important Panel from Maus

On page 61 of Maus, a large panel depicts a deadly shooting. A man reports news to Vladek, expressing that nearly 600 Jewish prisoners were executed in the woods nearby, and allegedly, they were supposed to be next in line. Just when hope had surfaced in belief that he was to be released as a prisoner of war, Vladek is demoralized by this account of the dire conditions that surround his current reality. This panel dramatically sets the tone for Vladek’s circumstance: foreshadowing the grave and ominous conditions of the Holocaust, and the impending depravity he will face.
